Idea Factory (Analyse 5 artists and designers 09/09/2019)

1.  The first artist I'm going to accept is called Jean Jullien. He is a graphic designer and illustrator from France. What attracts me most about his works is that most of his works are inspired by daily life. The style and lines are simple and casual, and the colors are simple and strong, but not dull. When the audience sees some works with black humor, it will trigger more thinking.

     2.  Stefan Sagmeister a New York based graphic designer, storyteller, and typographer. His design style was unconventional and provocative, and he changed the status quo and questioned the role of designers in society. Besides, his motto also inspired me for my future design "Design that needed courage from the creator and still having the ghost of these guts in the final execution.’’

   3. Kazimir Severinovich Malevich was a Russian geometric abstract painter. His work has intense colors and simple but powerful geometric shapes are deeply appealing. In supremacist, geometric shapes of different sizes are constantly changing, from lines to flat coloring, interlacing, overlapping or avoiding each other. A thin black line divides the work into two parts: a large black quadrilateral tilted slightly upward, its upper right corner disappearing from the frame; The lower half, which consists of a solid color image almost parallel to the plane, appears to be more stable. From this painting, malevich began to construct "the world without objects”.

4. Ettore SOTTSASS is a famous Italian architectural designer. He got rid of the mainstream Bauhaus modernist design style at that time to meet the needs of consumers and covered up the style of designers. But he boldly tried to infuse his designs with bright colors and whimsical ideas from inside his head. Sottsass's works, like his words, are extremely poetic, yet escape from the busy world. People looked at his works with puzzled eyes, but felt that daily life could be so wonderful. He majored in architecture, sottsass's achievements in the field of pop culture are remembered for nearly a century. He created everyday items that fueled the consumption boom of the 20th century.

0909-333.jpeg5.  Friedrich Becker was a goldsmith from Germany. He introduced an innovative element in his jewelry -- time. Since then, jewelry is not only a static three-dimensional object, but also can change with the passage of time, creating a new design concept. In 1964, he made his first Kinetic Jewelry. I also ove his motto "Man was born to play, but it turned out differently.” I think the audience will think more when they see his works and his motto.

Issey Miyake

Research Task 25/09/2019

I am interested in fashion & textile in this week's course. Because I think this major is very interesting, we can experience all kinds of hand drawing and use different fabrics. The clothes with patterns can be assembled into an interesting art.

Issey Miyake was born on April 22, 1938 in Hiroshima, Japan. He is a womenswear and fashion designer. In 1970, he founded the Miyake Design Studio, a high-end producer of women's fashion. In the late 1980s, he began experimenting with new pleats that allowed the wearer to move freely while making care and production easier. Clothes are cut and sewn, then sandwiched between layers of paper, put into a hot press, and pleated there. The fabric's "memory" preserves pleats and allows clothing to be worn when freed from the cocoon.

From “the Observer Fashion” evaluated : Issey Miyake: 45 years at the forefront of fashion. His clothes are light, ageless, trans-seasonal, cross-cultural, and ambi-sexual. One of his artwork— Flying Saucer dress. The key of his innovation lies in the impact and breakthrough of the whole western design thought. The tradition of European clothing design always emphasizes sensory stimulation, pursues exaggerated human lines, breast enhancement, waist and hips, and pays no attention to the function of clothing. However, he takes a new approach to find the source of fashion vitality, and explores the new beauty of clothing function, decoration and form from the perspective of Oriental clothing culture and philosophy. And the design of an unprecedented new concept of clothing, that is, defy the tradition, comfortable elegant, respect the wearer's personality, the body to get the greatest freedom of clothing. His originality has been far beyond the boundaries of the era and fashion, shows his understanding of The Times extraordinary.

To be honest, I think the major fashion&textile is very interesting and can learn a lot of new things. At the same time, I hope I can be a designer to change the limit in the future. I need more design, fashion&textile study to improve my design. So I hope to study this major in the future.

Friedrich Becker ( 0909 ARTIST RESEARCH)

0909 Research Task

Friedrich Becker was a goldsmith from Germany. Originally, he completed the study of aeronautical engineering with excellent results and became an outstanding aeronautical engineer. Then, as post-war Germany slumped, industry withered. Facing the changes of life, Friedrich Becker boldly decided to become a goldsmith. The experience of an aeronautical engineer gave Friedrich Becker a unique perspective on the art of jewelry and promoted him to successfully integrate mechanical structure with the art of jewelry. He introduced an innovative element in his jewelry -- time. Since then, jewelry is not only a static three-dimensional object, but also can change with the passage of time, creating a new design concept. In 1964, he made his first Kinetic Jewelry. Then, in his work Dynamic ring (materials: stainless steel, platinum, synthetic red corundum)  The elements of "colour kinetics" were gradually incorporated into his works, including some colored gemstones. He preferred synthetic blue spinel and synthetic red diamond. His first "kinetic ring" USES stainless steel and two synthetic red corundum hemispheres as the main materials, in the simplest vertical. This magical tessellation became known as tension tessellation. At the same time, his design is not limited to jewelry as an artistic form, but also extends to sculpture and public art. He designed and made motion sculptures. I think the reason why his works attract me is that his design is not limited to follow other artists' art forms, but to create some new design concepts and keep innovating. Besides, I really love his motto "Man was born to play, but it turned out differently.” I think the audience will think more when they see his works and his motto.

Alexander Wang

Research TASK 18/09/2019

Through the study of different majors this week, I have developed more interest in fashion communication. According to the theme of bold play imagination matching clothing, I think it is very interesting, also can harvest a lot.

The designer of my research this week is Alexander Wang. He is an American fashion designer. Alexander Wang founded his eponymous designer brand in 2004. In the design of a brand, the pursuit of details is a very important feature, such as the processing of the edge is very fine. One of his inspirations was the east side, where young skateboarders and their girlfriends could find a lot of freedom in them. Alexander Wang liked their way of life and their proud indifference, and took inspiration from that attitude to design free, uninhibited works. So that I am interested in his Western ideas of beauty and design ideas. When I saw him make ready-to-wear clothes, it broke my normal understanding of aesthetics and fashion design. In the November 1, 2018 issue of fashion magazine. The headline Alexander Wang on His Evolution from Downtown Party Kid to Mature Designer. He shared his design idea: "Having a different purpose besides just making clothes and making product is incredibly important.” He designed women's underwear for Uniqlo x Alexander Wang collaboration. He said :“I didn’t want people to think that this was something that could only be worn under a certain context and so we really tried to push this concept of lifewear. There’s pieces in there that I see girls wearing to the club, wearing just walking down the street, wearing to work with a blazer over it. It’s so versatile.” He put forward the concept of underwear design and other conventional underwear designers are not the same point of view, design concept and use. I like this major (fashion communication) because I feel exposed to new things. I have seen many famous designers make bold innovations in their works, and I also hope that I can make bold use of my ideas in my works in the future. In this field of specialization, there are many occupations such as: fashion journalist ; fashion photographer ; fashion designer; fashion manager; fashion illustrator.

Shigeo Fukuda

Research Task 02/10/2019

This week I research the artist is Shigeo Fukuda was a sculptor, medallist, graphic artist and poster designer who created optical illusions. One of his artwork — Victory in 1945 poster. This poster designed in 1975, uses a cartoon-like form to create a concise and humorous graphic language, depicting the image of a bullet flying back into the barrel of a gun, lampooning the perpetrators of the war for their own consequences. Designed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the end of world war ii, this humorous, funny style can bring viewers a sense of pleasure.

Secondly, in a 1975 promotional poster for Keiwang department store in Japan. He began to explore the interrelationship between "figure" and “bottom”. The work skillfully uses black and white, positive and negative to form the legs of men and women, the upper and lower repeated juxtaposition, black "bottom" on the white female legs and white "bottom" on the black male legs, virtual and solid complementary, mutual existence, to create a concise and interesting effect, the technique is "inverted bitmap bottom inversion”. Third artwork is the poster. It design of shigeo futian poster exhibition in 1987, futian expressed the four different perspectives of people sitting still in front of the stage in the same picture. He used simple lines and planes to create interlacing space, and large areas of yellow and black silhouette contrast to create a strong visual effect on the whole picture. The ambiguity of spatial consciousness has multiple meanings in visual expression.

From the website “ It’s nice that ” said that: The limited colour palettes and reductive line work remained at the heart of his work. Testament to Fukuda’s skill was his induction into the Art Director’s Club Hall of Fame in 1987 – the first Japanese designer to be awarded such an honour – who described him as “Japan’s consummate visual communicator.” ( Website link:  https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/shigeo-fukuda) From this, I learned that he had his own unique design style (concise and bright style), which contrasted with the design style of Japanese designers at that time. He showed his idea perfectly with a pattern. After seeing his works, I think he is a successful designer. He has designed many excellent artwork. His style: simple and bright, and I like the style. In the future, I also plan to learn graphic design during my undergraduate study. I will learn more about relevant professional knowledge for my design in the future. For the graphic designer, they can create: catalogs; magazines; visual identity (such as letterhead, business cards, brand guides, logos); Marketing materials: flyers, brochures, postcards, one-sheets, posters; product packaging and labels; shirt & apparel designs reports; illustrations & clip-art etc… When I graduate, the professions I can become are Web Designer, Creative Director, Photo Editor,  Architecture & Engineering Drafter,Video & Film Editor, Graphic Designer,Product Designer etc…The reason why I want to learn graphic design is that I hope I can express myself in a diversified way, not limited to words. It is successfully expressed through patterns, collages, photography and hand-drawing.
