I am fortunate to participate in the foundation course at the University of the Arts London.
In the first part of my study here, I have been exposed to a variety of courses, including
fashion, architecture, product design, and graphic design. In this process, I gradually
developed an interest in graphic design. After spent time exploring possibilities in the art
and design area, I was assigned in the illustration course as my specialty. During the study
process, I learned the basic principles of design, how to use design software, how to think
independently, complete project plans, and build my portfolio. These learning modules have
improved my design skills and cultivated my design understanding and aesthetic level. I
harvested a novel learning experience. I finished a series of illustration for a story through
traditional printing techniques. However, I still identify graphic design as the specialism I
want to explore in the future--with the desire to be a top graphic designer; I hope to further
my studies in this field. Therefore, I am writing in support of my application for admission
into the BA Graphic Design program offered by your esteemed university.
In addition to theoretical study, the design practice in the foundation course played the most
important role in the development of my abilities. It equipped me with the required skills for
pursuing the next level of study. at the end of the first stage, I choose to do a graphic
design related project. In this project, I focus on a common social problem -- social anxiety
disorder, and made a poster, which full of visual impact, around this topic. It was posted in
the toilet of Archway campus, and attracted many people' s attention to this symptom. The
completion of this project has given me a great sense of achievement. It well conveys the
message I want to convey to the audience and attracts attention. Therefore, it is successful.
I found myself enjoying the process of developing my design idea. The process that starts from
a general concept, doing research drawing drafts, revising it repeatedly, and finally getting
results, gave me a great sense of accomplishment. The practice also broke my wrong impression
of design work. In the past, I thought that design was as much dependent on inspiration as
artThis process of thinking is fascinating, and I always fall into it. Therefore, I think the
graphic design industry is more suitable for me.
As for my favorite graphic designer that keeps inspiring me, although there are many design
trends and schools in western countries, but my favorite is a young Chinese font designer
named Zuozuo. The reason why I like him is that he combines the ancient Chinese font design
with western design thinking to create a font with a simpler form to cope with modern reading
habits without losing Chinese features. In particular, he designed fonts based on western
graffiti, which is very suitable for mixed typesetting of Chinese and English. Zuozuo is one
of them that motivates me to become professional. Just like the project I did in the
foundation course, I hope to focus on the mind-provoking project, such as to arouse the
audience's attention to the social issues, or to advocate creative group to come up with the
solution to the challenges faced by the design industry, so as to realize my sense of social
responsibility. I believe that my learning ability and enthusiasm for the design industry will
make me a qualified candidate for the Central Saint Martins of the University of the Arts
London. I hope I could have the honor to immerse myself in a unique artistic and design
atmosphere created by your school and be influenced by culture, great ideas and infinite
creativity. Therefore, I sincerely hope that my application for admission will be considered.
